This weeks iconic design is by British designer George Carwardine. The Anglepoise Light has become one of the most recognisable desk lamps through its styling and function.

Designed in 1932, the lamps most innovative feature was the system for posing. This however was a result of an invention of Carwardine’s whilst developing suspension for vehicles which was his speciality. This can be seen in it’s very industrial and functional appearance! The joints and spring tension allow the lamp to be moved into a wide range of positions which it will maintain without being clamped.

Since the initial creation other uses have been found for the mechanism such as holding microphones. However, the design teamed aesthetics and function so well that even today manufactures create pose-able lamps based off of his original designs.
