This weeks iconic design is the Cozy Coupe designed by Jim Mariol, and released to market in 1979. Described as a “cross between a Volkswagen Beetle and Fred Flintstone’s vehicle” the Cozy Coupe was one of the first moulded plastic toy cars sold in the USA. It was so popular it was referred to as the World’s best selling car for most of the decade since it outsold real cars at the time.

As the years went by the brand had to develop new forms to keep up with the car styling at the time, however the original design has always been available and hasn’t changed. Well that was until recently. In 2009 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Cozy Coupe it was redesigned. Whilst it kept the main basic form aspects such as pillars were thickened for safety and it was given a large pair of cartoon eyes. As well as these aesthetic changes some electrical elements were added such as a remote that made sounds of doors unlocking and horns beeping to mimic a real vehicle.
